Sun in Virgo: Discernment

The play is over. Leo has finished its solar soliloquy and takes a bow. Its golden aura fades as the house lights rise. As the Sun moves into Virgo, we go back: back to reality, back to responsibilities, back to managing our daily duties with attention, care, and effort.

Virgo is the season of preparing, tending, and sowing -- for Virgo knows that planting seeds carefully and correctly will make all the difference later. As an archetype, Virgo understands that small details are sacred. It sees that the (eco)system is made of all its component parts -- an intricate fabric woven of sun, water, soil, plants, animals, people, and even the smallest and nearly indiscernible microbiota. Virgo shows its devotion by identifying, examining, and caring for these parts, for it knows that they are critical to the health of the whole. For Virgo, all the details matter in sustaining the complex system that is life.

In its powerfully microscopic view, Virgo can see with the naked eye what others cannot. Its power to clean, distill, and analyze the data -- whether it is in the form of systems, numbers, or its favorite, spreadsheets-- is unmatched. Its most critical point of discernment, however, is not allowing the microscopic to become myopic. When it loses perspective on the interconnectedness of all things and its duties to the whole, Virgo can become hypercritical, picking things apart to the point of disconnection and destruction. If we approach the minutiae of our lives with tunnel vision, we keep ourselves very, very small. Virgo’s challenge is to remember that its criticism must be in service to a larger vision. During this time, we can use Virgo’s strengths to take care of all the details, so that they may expand and evolve into something greater and grander when in relationship to one other.

With the Sun in Virgo, we are given extra light to see the implications of our words, actions, and intentions, big and small. This is a season to examine how you spend your time, energy, money, and attention, and be honest about their personal and collective impacts. What do your daily habits and routines add up to for yourself and for others? How can you make small, focused edits to serve collective liberation?

No change is too small. Virgo season encourages us to dedicate ourselves to meaningful micro-optimizations. These changes could be anything from beginning a $5 monthly contribution to a local organization; committing to replacing “you guys” with “everyone” in daily conversation; checking in on a friend who could use it at a set time every week; or choosing to buy items that you use regularly from a local business rather than from Amazon. The possibilities are infinite. You know where you can refine -- know that even the smallest changes, when made with diligence, intention, and regularity, can be extremely impactful.

With the Sun in Virgo, we are energized to take stock and dive deeply into the ingredients that compose our lives. Use this time to identify what no longer serves you and what no longer serves us. If we hold this process with dedication and devotion, the seeds that we plant carefully will grow -- and create something beautiful and bountiful upon harvest.
