Sun in Sagittarius: Zeal

As we gallop from one season to the next, our spirits shift once again. Although the days grow shorter and darkness looms longer -- vestiges of Scorpio’s underworld journeys -- our eyes and bodies have now adjusted. We begin to notice lights bursting into the night, eruptions of twinkling yellow and orange amidst the cold and quiet world. With the grandest invitation imaginable, Sagittarius season opens its doors for life and light to enter, guiding us into the fantastic unknown.

Larger than life, Sagittarius seeks fullness in all forms -- full fervor, full flavor, and full freedom. Living up to its symbol as the archer, Sagittarius aims high and far, and it approaches life with an adventurous, enthusiastic, and globally-oriented spirit. Sagittarius believes that it must go big or go home, and it always chooses to go big. The ultimate nomad -- donned in a leather jacket and a shameless attitude -- this sign seeks to traverse geographic, philosophical, and spiritual realms without boundaries, rules, or restraint.

Moving like wildfire, Sagittarius refuses to be contained in its no-holds-barred pursuit of all that life has to offer. However, it is not content to experience it all unconsciously; ultimately, Sagittarius wants to understand the meaning behind its adventures. Its task is to uncover the truths of the world and to see the Big Picture. Given this wide-angled perspective, Sagittarius is often attracted to philosophy, teaching, religion, and spirituality, which provide meaning and purpose to a sometimes-chaotic and incomprehensible human existence. Sagittarius possesses incredible capacity to cultivate and share its wisdom; however, if its perspective becomes dogmatic and self-righteous, its power can become its downfall. When convinced that its learnings are the Ultimate Truth, Sagittarius loses the flexible perspective and open-mindedness that are key to understanding nuanced, complex, and constantly-evolving ideas.

Sagittarius’ zealous energy also serves to refresh our spirits and lighten the collective mood, pulling us upward and outward from Scorpio season’s mysterious depths. After a time of darkness and transformation, drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) are necessary -- and Sagittarius is more than happy to get the libations flowing. Traditionally, the sun’s entry into Sagittarius ushers us into festivus season, bringing with it celebrations, feasting, indulgence, and extra sparkle. Lively, bright-eyed, and jovial, Sagittarius serves as the life of the zodiacal party (while also likely being among the first to drunk dial and spill drinks along the way). For Sagittarius, life is short, so why not live it up? Glimmering, audacious, and sometimes messy, Sagittarius is not afraid to be extra.

Typically, ‘tis the season for merriment, mistletoe, and holiday festivities -- but 2020 is no typical year, and this Sagittarius’ season is not typical, either. As we approach the holidays alongside skyrocketing cases of COVID-19, we must confront the reality that traditional ways of celebrating pose incalculable risks to our individual and collective health. With the Sun squaring Neptune in Pisces and trining Chiron and Mars in Aries this season, many will indulge in lighthearted parties with friends and family; many will prioritize their individual happiness and satisfaction above all else. However, this year, we must see the big picture and understand that our fantasies of free-spirited celebration are ultimately perilous. Instead, we are being asked to direct our energy, creativity, and will towards actions and intentions that will support our physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Use the energy of Sagittarius season to keep you and your loved ones healthy and develop safe, creative ways to celebrate. Spread the message like wildfire; preach it from the mountaintops of Zoom. In the digital (or six-foot) space between us -- and in Sagittarius’ honor -- let the light, levity, and laughter flow.
